Note: 'Max Sitting' is one of the artist's most significant and well-known works, having been used as the front cover illustration for the artist's exhibition catalogue at the National Portrait Gallery.

 

Depicting the actor and entertainer Max Wall, it has been exhibited extensively, including 'Max Wall Pictures by Maggi Hambling' National Portrait Gallery, London, March-May 1983 (reproduced in catalogue as no.9); John Hansard Gallery, Southampton May-June 1983; Newlyn Art Gallery, Sept-Oct 1983; 'Artist and Model' Whitworth Art Gallery, Manchester, 1986, catalogue no.22.
